The meaning of love to death is linked to the French and other countries with royalty. When their king died, people would say, "the king is dead. Long live the king." This has become "I love you to death" for friends and family who are not royalty.

idiom: labor of love

origin: it comes from old testament of Jacob. Jacob had to run from his brother Esau (Jacob wad not a nice boy when he was a kid, but he got changed when he met god face to face) and he went to stay with his uncle Laban, back in old Mesopotamia. Laban had 2 daughters, Leah and Rachel. Rachel was pretty but Leah wasn't, Jacob fell in love with Rachel, and asked to marry her. Laban said fine, if you work for me for 7 years. Jacob said yes but, when he took off his brides veil off, he found it was Leah instead. (his uncle was as big trickster as he was!) Angry, he confronted to Laban but, he made the old excuse that younger daughters didn't marry before older daughters but, he could have Rachel to for an extra 7 years of work. Jacob had to agree. (The bible records in Genesis 29:20)
So Jacob served 7 years to get Rachel, which only felt like a few days to him because of his love for her. Thus was a labor of love

Exp: Building a snowboard park in my backyard is hard work. It is a labor of love.
